Here in the UK we have some of the tightest gun control laws in the world but we also have just about the lowest gun homicide rate in the world. Not even our police ordinarily carry guns.
The solution is simple enough - if you want to reduce the homicide rate you've got to take away the guns. As has been suggested above, applying that solution to the United States would most likely be an impossible task.

See our police here in Canada do carry guns, so It's not quite as tight as it is in the UK, but yes you are right, if there are no guns than that means less violence.

if there are no guns than that means less violence. It might be more accurate to say there would be less fatalities since guns are for the most part designed to kill. Not having a gun in an aggressive situation between civilians just means 1 less way to harm each other. But that's still better than having guns in the mix. A few years ago The Daily Show did an amazing report on the issues with gun control in the US, and specifically highlighted Australia's gun control laws they put into effect after a mass shooting. Absolutely worth a watch; www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pOiOhxujsE&list=PL8eq5DPi5SWyNbFQ8qdJSfWtblaY3-iky

If you say that guns should be banned by pointing out the tragedies and shootings then you should be all for not allowing people to own knives. There are so many tragic stabbings occurring so why shouldn't we outlaw knives? For that matter why not get rid of cars too. So many people die in car accidents, hit and runs especially with so many drunk drivers.
My point is to make this obscure comparison to show you that bad things happen because of bad people. Making guns illegal will only stop law abiding citizens. Criminals will head to the black market and get their guns no matter what. The only thing taking away guns will be to keep law abiding citizens from potentially protecting themselves from danger. As well as fueling the black market and gangs.
Drugs are illegal for you to have in your possession so what happens? Drug cartels sneak the stuff in and criminals still find their way to it.
Regardless of anything it would be unconstitutional to not allow guns as we the people have the right to bear arms. Now I completely agree that there should be strict standards in place to qualify you to legally obtain a gun so that it is not just a breeze for a bad person to get their hands on one.

Again though, the statistics show that countries that don't allow guns such as Canada and the U.K. have a significantly lower rate of gun fatalities, so it is shown to save lives.
