I think the roads will be safer with self driving cars I'm not so sure of that, but with human cars and self driving cars mixed together there could be problems. The Google cars are already programmed to be very timid in traffic. I imagine most of the problems with human/car interactions would be because of, surprise, human error.

Yeah I know human drivers aren't perfect, but it's very difficult to believe that a computer could be perfect either, These self driving cars aren't where I live yet but it will be interesting to see if they become a standard on the market.

A calculator performs is task flawlessly, albeit a limited one by comparison to an autonomous car. Industrial welders, an electric car window, virtual chess AIs, all perform their tasks, regardless of scope, in most ways better than a human could. A car with a finite set of operating parameters could, in theory at least, surpass any human in the same category. The car wouldn't have to do make up or answer a cell phone, all Its processing power would be devoted to the singular purpose it was created for.

That does make sense, but unless the cars can all communicate with each other I wonder how they'll know when another car is near them and prevent a collision.

They have several sensors, 3D laser mapping, GPS and radar that lets them map out their surroundings in real time. Many mid to high range cars today all have auto breaks as well, from Volvo's to Tesla's.

I've never heard of auto brakes before.
