I wonder if humans will have any control whatsoever over these cars though.

One question I have is if we will need speed limits? and if we still do Would they be able to be programmed into the gps system? Of course there will be limits. If nothing else, the cars themselves will naturally be limited in performance. Those Google cars don't have much power to begin with. This is a G-Wiz, a small electric car produced in India from 2001 to 2012. It is physically unable to break any speed limits, yet was popular enough to be in production for over 10 years. Even more amazing; Everyone hated it. And this is a Ferrari 488 GTB. It can pretty much exclusively exceed every speed limit. 2 cars on opposite ends of the spectrum; Both sell really well. There's almost always a market for every car. I can't say how well an autonomous car would sell, just that It's very likely it will sell. Though in my mind, I imagine things like the Google car would serve more of a Taxi/Uber function, something you call for a lift, not something you'd want to own. Probably minimal control, if at all. After all, why invest in a self driving car, if you're still driving it?

How would these cars judge for changing weather conditions though? a slick patch of ice or something they cant detect in advance?

That will take away a lot of jobs Eventually, yeah it could sadly, but sometimes that happens. Exact same thing happened in the industrial sectors since machines work faster, better, longer and cheaper than humans.

That will take away a lot of jobs That would be part of the problem too, The Taxi and public transit industry is quite large in most places around the school and for those jobs to be lost could be devastating to families and communities.

Good point. Just off the top of my head I can think of 2 solutions though. One could be to just hook the car up to a weather service, and It would set its traction control and safety parameters according to the weather. Or, modern Ferrari's actually come equipped with something they call the Manettino dial, or switch, located in the lower right part of the steering wheel. You just turn the dial into the appropriate setting, this particular model has settings for Ice, Wet, Comfort and 2 sport settings. Naturally only 3 of those would be needed on autonomous cars. A bit of manual input.
