Hi all! Just though I would make a thread about the unusual shape of a Nintendo64 controller, it has three prongs, humans have two hands. The shape left me holding the centre and right prongs, leaving a useless third left prong, one has to question what they were thinking at the time.

Yes I myself have always wondered why they shaped the controller that way, it was the 1980's so video games weren't super popular then, however the N64 did become fairly popular.

The controller for the SNES is similar to the N64 controller too.

I think they wanted everyone of all size to enjoy it. See, if you have big hands, you can use just the left and right prongs but people with smaller hands can use just the center prong and left or right prong. Not sure though, that's just what I'm guessing. I'm probably wrong.

It's a true fact that there was a medical condition called " Nintendo hand " back in the '80's and '90's as a result of these old controllers. Because a persons hand is not meant to hold a square shaped controller like the SNES one.
This is why controllers these days are designed much better than the old ones.

Thinking back I just remember playing it at my cousins and thinking how cool it was. XD As for why they made it like that I have no idea and can't really say I've thought too much about it. I would think it was mostly just a sales prop. It went from the boring square controllers to something that looked like it came out of Galaga! ^^'' Not to mention they had all the different rumble paks too.

Yeah, the N64 controller was uber weird. A lot of controllers for old systems were weird. Not necessarily. The NES was a pretty normal controller.2 buttons on one side and D-Pad on the other side.Simplistic.The SNES controller wasn't that weird either. They just decided to place the analog stick in the bottom middle of the controller.Don't know what Nintendo was thinking.
