Understandable, but Microsoft never has to worry about being in the red. No but I bet they where when they first started. Most companies are when they first start.

What a few people dont see is that people work for microsoft and want to be paid for their time and knowledge to write the software for the upgrade. When you go to work you want to get paid for doing your job right? Of course that makes sense. They do deserve to be paid for their work. Though how much have they marked up the price over the cost made to produce it. Windows 10 was in development possibly at least since 2011. The cost of production alone is probably several million Dollars in the software engineers salaries alone. I wouldn't be shocked if it was tens of millions of Dollars when you include QA testing, office spaces, hardware and finally production of it. I tried finding actual numbers for the production/development costs, but they're likely rolled into Microsofts general expense bills, so It'd be impossible to determine exactly what the cost were. I did find some enlightening articles talking and explaining the whole thing though; www.pcworld.com/article/2957365/windows/why-windows-10-isnt-really-free-the-subtle-new-world-of-built-in-costs.htmlwww.pcworld.com/article/2056886/the-free-os-revolution-what-apples-mavericks-move-means-for-windows.html

The thing is, though, Vincent, is if you upgraded to Windows 10 automatically as I did, then surely the updates should be free since you already have the product?
To answer your previous question, food and clothes are necessities so we expect to pay for them if that makes sense. But not all providers of food and clothes are billionaires. I can't speak on cars since I don't drive.

The thing is, though, Vincent, is if you upgraded to Windows 10 automatically as I did, then surely the updates should be free since you already have the product? The Updates are free. Did you pay money for any of these for instance? support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12387/windows-10-update-history That does not make sense. Your reasoning lacks cohesion. If something is a necessity, we should expect to pay for it, but If something's not a necessity (like you imply Windows isn't), it should be free? Using that assumption, literally everything except food and clothes should be free. You don't need phones, TVs, books, cars, ships, planes or anything really. Food and clothing are products, they cost money to produce, and to purchase. Software is a product, they cost money to produce, and to purchase. The fact that you might need food or clothing to not die doesn't negate the fact that they cost money to produce, unless you're willing to skin some deer for hides and eat venison.

If you are talking about needing deer for hides and don't mind eating venison steak, I have seen a ton of deer where I live and don't have a problem getting rid of them since they tend to be destructive to gardens and crops.

I was really just using colorful metaphors to make my point, but alright. Venison is tasty.

I have never eaten venison and never will. I don't eat any animal product nor do I wear it. Vegetarian for 20 years. Love animals, not so keen on people.

I can see both points of the argument, but leaning more towards Vincent's reasoning and all updates are indeed free. Windows 10 was free initially and those that didn't download it within that free time frame... well tough luck.
