Have any of you ever taken part in the National Novel Writing Month? If you have never heard of this, check it out here. I signed up last year, but epically failed to actually produce any bit of a novel. Oh well, maybe next time. =p

I've heard about this before. Back when Titansgo.net was still on the internet and active many members would participate. I'm a horrible writer myself, so I never really bothered to check this out. :V

It is nice to have someone to bounce off I have never heard of National Novel Writing Month before. I have an idea for a novel, I started the first page or two infact, but I prefer to try to write scripts rather than novels. They are usually a few hundred pages shorter for a start, lol. But I respect anyone who writes a novel, it takes a lot of word. A lot, lot more work than most people realise, there is story structure, character development, story pace, etc, etc. It really is an achievement to finish a novel. Well done fore even trying, Echo and I hope you get to finish it this year

imagineer, Oh yes most definitely! A script is more focused on the dialogue to a story, right? I would have a hard time writing a script since my writing weakness is dialogue. I don't know it just feels sort of weird lol which is why most of the characters I rp stay fairly silent. Though I ran into an interesting dilemma where I have a cat character who is mute. It is strange working with him not being able to verbally communicate, but I love the challenge! ^^ A most important part to writing a novel is keeping track of all your characters and plots involved. That would be rather difficult for me, I'd need spreadsheets or something to have everything all in one place. Thank you a bunch! <3 and I hope you make some progress on your idea as well, don't give up! ^^

We all start from some point and we can only grow if we write and continue to write. ^^ I would also recommend reading often, it really does help with writing!

A script is more focused on the dialogue to a story, right? Not at all! The story is the most important part. Think about your favourite movie, is it just a bunch of people standing around talking, or is it a good story? In fact the standards script has a 3 act structure. And a standard story pace. In the 1st ten pages you have to let people know what the story is about and who the characters are. At around page 21 is when you have to put in a plot point (something that drives the story forwards), and this is where you turn your main characters world upside down. e.g kidnap the ex-special forces solder’s wife, or partnering the detective with the new transfer that he does not want to work with, ect. Then act two begins, the longest act of the 3. Here your characters face obstacles and challenges (known as conflict) as they try to complete their mission. There is another plot point here, something significant that drives the story forwards. Then it is act 3. The last act. This is where things really ramp up for your character, e.g. they have that final big show down with the enemy, if it is an action story. That is the main story. You also have to have a secondary story running along side the main story as well. e.g. Your reluctantly partnered cops go form hating each other to becoming friends. Or the love interest of some kind, etc. In fact there is a saying in script writing; “Show us, don’t tell us. Unless you have to.” Meaning don’t have your character say “I love you.” in dialogue, when you could show that he loves her by have him take her hand and then hold her affectionately close as they slow dance to a romantic song or something. A most important part to writing a novel is keeping track of all your characters and plots involved. That would be rather difficult for me, I'd need spreadsheets or something to have everything all in one place. I use the index card system. Write a rough description of each scene on an index card. It makes it easier to swap scenes around or add and take away scenes as needed. It helps me to keep track of my characters and the story pace for both the main and secondary stories. I agrre with echo, blaze . If you like to write You should not stay away from writing just because you think you are a bad writer. We all start some place And lets just say that you are a really, really, really bad writer...so what? If you enjoy it, who cares? I say don’t refrain from doing something you want because you are afraid of what people might think. If you want to write, then write. If you want to skip down the street, then skip. Why should we not do something because of what a bunch of strangers, that we will never see again, or will never see in the first place, might think?
