Here in the U.S, as long as you vote, you get called for jury duty, you have to go to. If you don't vote, you don't get called. Also, if you are over, I think it's 65 years old, you don't have to go.
I have gotten 2 summons for jury duty, thankfully it got settled out of court, so I didn't have to go. I wouldn't mind doing it when I am retired, but as long as I am working, I don't want to do it. The problem with it not being mandatory, is that very few would do it if it wasn't, that's why you aren't given a choice.

My mother was called twice when she was younger but got excused both times.
