Do you think it's right for electricity/water providers to cut people off for non-payment? I don't think it's right especially in the winter as these are essential resources and if someone genuinely cannot pay their bill but is trying they shouldn't be punished.

Most utility companies will work with you and there are agencies that help with the bills, but if a customer abuses the system then yes they should be cut off. I have had my electric cut off before in the middle of summer and it is miserable. I have also had my water cut off too. There was a time in my life where I was not good about paying my utility bills and I got what I deserved, and I have had to deal with utility company not wanting to work with me.

Sounds maybe similar to asking if it is right for ProBoards to cut people's forums off by switching them to saying "In accordance with Section 25(a) of the ProBoards Terms of Service, this forum has been taken offline." without any reason given, especially if it a paid forum on Forums.net

I agree with @amulet.
If you really just can not pay, then they should work something out with you. But if you are just not paying out if irresponsibility then yes, I think they have every right to cut you off. People can't just go into a store and take food without paying and just say "but food is vital.", everyone would class it as stealing, and not paying for water/electric is stealing too. It costs the companies to produce water and electric, they should get paid for it. Although they should not charge extortionate prices as some of them like to do.

I don't agree with it , they could kill someone doing that in the winter In which case, you would likely be wanting to find out if you can have them charged with murder.

from what I have heard but not quite sure how true it is but utility companies cannot cut off if it gets to certain temp or could kill someone. Like I said I dont know how true it is. But I do know here they wont cut you off if the temp is 110 degrees or higher.

I think they should give people a buffer of maybe a week or two, in case they can't pay for whatever reason. If the person continuously doesn't pay then they should cut it off after giving a few warnings. It would be ideal for the company to talk with the person, but since that's probably not feasible, IMO it's enough to give warnings and then take action if the person still doesn't do anything about it.

They do send cut off warnings here with a date that their service will be cut off. It usually a week or so so the person can make some sort of arrangements.
