Just spotted this thread, when I was working I loved a night shift and really, in summertime it is very hard for me to sleep if it's light outside, I tend to stay awake then fall asleep when the bedroom goes dark.   I agree, it needs to be dark for me to fall asleep.

I would do my allocated patrols and then sit down and read a good book, I have read so many books in my time on a night shift I thought I was a librarian.

It all depended on the building Matt, there was one building, a huge factory complex and it would take a good 20 minutes to do a patrol and it was dark and creepy. You could hear noises all night, mainly machines just cooling down and making creaking noises but because I am a bit physic and have seen ghosts in my time I could feel a presence following me.

I can remember Matt working in a factory down South around 1980 odd's and I was on a back shift, winter time around 20.00hrs at night. There was only a few of us working and I was up the other end of the factory by myself working on a machine cleaning truck tyres. In front of me was a window with a broken pane of glass in which you could see into another section of the factory. I was busy working away and happened to look up at the window and I saw a big tall figure walking past the window and disappear into another section of the factory, I thought nothing of it at first and then got curious who it was aa I did not recognise the person and made my way around to that section of the factory but when I looked at the section the figure disappeared into that section was pitch black with the light turned off, I switched the lights on and no one was there. After that, over the years I got used to this whoever which would play games with me by moving a tyre I was working on or switch lights on and off and in the end if I was busy I would yell out "P*** OFF, I am busy....go away." But whoever never meant me any harm. I found out later that the section of the factory where the figure disappeared into was only new and had been built on waste ground where years ago an old man had died in the then work yard.

When I was younger, I loved the night far more than days. I'm much more of a day person, but I work graveyards, so I have to be up at nights.
