So, last week the new Top Gear finally premiered to very mixed results. The first episode was seriously underwhelming given the shoes the new hosts have to fill, but a lot of people (myself included) feel like they really missed their mark, even if you went in with low expectations.
Chris Evans taking the lead role has been almost universally panned, and I can't think of many people who like him, but mostly they can just tolerate him. He's loud, and not that funny. I can't tell if he's naturally excited and loud, or just trying to copy Clarkson's trademark style. Either way it sucks.
Matt LeBlanc taking on a more "straight man" role works for me though. He's almost the complete opposite of Evans in his attitude, being very calm and relaxed. Paired with almost any other lead host I feel like he could really excel at a car show.
While we're only 2 episodes in we have gotten to see 1 of the extra hosts, Sabine Schmitz, in a segment featuring the new Chevy Corvette and the Dodge Viper. It was an alright segment, but it felt so scripted and stiff, and most of Sabine's lines were cringe worthy.
Last Sunday's episode did however offer a fairly decent segment where Evans and LeBlanc along with Eddie Jordan had to transport 3 musicians (Tinie Tempah, Sharleen Spiteri and Seasick Steve) to the tallest pub in Africa for a gig.
It was a typical Top Gear road trip with challenges and accidents. LeBlanc I feel really came into his own here and was the only one who showed some chemistry with his passenger, Tempah.
While It was the highlight of this season so far, It still feels much worse than a slow Old Top Gear episode.
Even though I went into the new season with fairly low expectations, mainly due to Evans, I find myself disappointed. Especially with the news that the old TG hosts new show, The Grand Tour, will feature the most exiting trilogy of epic supercars on the market today (The Ferrari LaFerrari, Porsche 918 and McLaren P1), and pit them against each other, something fans have been screaming for for years.
Anyone else been watching the new series?
