In Britain voting is not compulsory but perhaps it ought to be. At local elections especially, the turnout can be pitifully low sometimes only around 20% To encourage people to at least attend voting perhaps one idea is whether there should be a "None Of The Above" box at the bottom of the list of candidates. You can already do this in one way by writing it on the ballot paper. When the election results are declared it is usual that the number of "Spoilt" papers is stated.

Even if it's mandatory, you could still put in a spoilt vote ... I don't think forcing people to vote would be a good step in an ideal society, it should be that people want to vote. That's not going to happen though, so it looks like the only option to make sure you get enough votes is to make it mandatory. Otherwise, there's bound to be people who don't vote since not everyone cooperates.

You can just take the paper they give you to the booth and not fill it out or write another name on it eg: Mickey Mouse and put 1 next to it but I think by not filling it our properly it automatically means it will count to the current government (don't quote me on that however). p.s Mickey Mouse would do a better a job
