Why don't you agree with it? Because as a consumer why should I have to pay for the software of a computer I already purchased? Because those two concepts, like i said earlier, are not mutually exclusive. Buying one doesn't entitle you to the other. Lots of people buy computers without any OS installed, opting to go for Linux, or purchasing Windows entirely separate. Microsoft is a software company, they manufacturer software (mostly, but we'll only focus on Windows in this discussion). They do not necessarily build the computer you happen to have Windows installed on. You can for example, walk into a store today, and buy a Dell laptop running Windows 10. In this transaction, Dell makes money on the hardware sale (the CPU, Motherboard, Graphics Card etc.) whilst Microsoft makes money on the software (Windows 10). If you assume that Windows should be free, Microsoft would receive no revenue from this transaction. Every software manufacturer eventually fazes out older software versions, without exception, because keeping those older systems running eventually becomes unprofitable as the majority of users move on to newer software. And i must, sadly, again stress that Windows has always cost money. It will always cost to upgrade your software, because they are expensive to develop and maintain. It isn't just that It's "within their rights" to charge for a product they develop, It's how the company pays for their employees salaries, customer service, R&D, office spaces and so on.

No, Amulet, I don't believe we should be given things.
But things shouldn't be so bloody expensive!
Vincent (great name, incidentally), we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

But things shouldn't be so bloody expensive! If you're referring to the 119,99$ price tag on Windows 10 (It's similarly priced to previous Windows editions), it costs so much because you're paying for a private license to the software, as well as guaranteed free support for the software's lifetime. People who bought Windows XP in 2001 for the full retail price of 199$ then also got 14 years of free support and software updates. Vincent (great name, incidentally Thank you. we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. If you'll allow it; One last point I'd like to make. Can you make an argument for why Windows 10 should be free, that can't also be used to justify other products like cars, food or clothing also being free?

What a few people dont see is that people work for microsoft and want to be paid for their time and knowledge to write the software for the upgrade. When you go to work you want to get paid for doing your job right?

When you go to work you want to get paid for doing your job right? Of course that makes sense. They do deserve to be paid for their work. Though how much have they marked up the price over the cost made to produce it.

Every company has their own standard on profit margin. My dad owned a lumber company years ago which I worked there. But he decided to close it in 1996. Lowes decided they were going to build a store here 2 years before that. Which we lost allot of business because of this. There was no way we could compete with lowes because they can purchase their products way cheaper then we could because they were buying for multiple stores compared to our buying for one store. The more you buy the cheaper the product is. so they were able to sell their products allot cheaper then us. I can imagine that microsofts software is alot cheaper now compared to what it could be if it wasnt such a big company. I have no idea what the cost is to produce the software.
I do know some places make a huge profit just like there are companies that hardly make a profit. That is also why it is so difficult to start a new business, because it takes some time if ever to start making a profit and get out of the red.

Understandable, but Microsoft never has to worry about being in the red.
